Bishop's Castle

It is possible to call Bishop's Castle a real gem of Colorado and seeing it for the first time takes one's breath away when you realize that this huge building was built solely by one man. The castle belongs to Jim Bishop who has been building it for more than 50 years (with the only plans those in his own head). To this day you may even see him still working there on his never-ending additional projects like a drawbridge and moat. No one lives there, but everyone is welcome to visit. Near the top of the castle is a striking metal dragon head also made by Jim. You are free to explore the entire interior of the castle, including climbing the two high stone towers at both ends.

We will also visit the Royal Gorge Bridge which is one of the highest suspension bridges in the world. It was built in 1929 and stretches 1270 feet across while soaring 956 feet above the Arkansas River. You can walk across the bridge (unless you are too nervous). The Royal Gorge Railroad runs along the base of the canyon beside the Arkansas River, and you can also see people rafting way down below during summer months.
