Southeast Colorado La Junta trip

Southeast Colorado La Junta trip

This two day trip to the La Junta area included two historic site tours, the old settlement called Boggsville
with an early ranching family's house and Bent's Old Fort, one of the key Indian trading and military
points along the Sante Fe Trail in the mid-19th century. Also included was a tour of the Koshare Indian
Museum, an excellent art museum, really quite unexpectedly good for it's small town location. But the
tour highlight was an early evening search of the dirt back roads south of La Junta for busy tarantulas, all
males out and about looking for females. They can only be seen so readily during the month of
September, and we were rewarded with close-up observation of many. A most unusual tour experience,
for sure.
